The Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) is pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has approved a slate of candidates, as recommended by the Nominating Committee, for the 2016 Board of Directors Elections.
The board has nominated Tracy Ging of Volcafe Specialty and Tea for 2nd Vice President. For the five open director positions, the board’s nominees are Aida Batlle of Everest S.A., Andrew Linnemann of Starbucks Coffee Company, Chad Trewick of Reciprocafé, LLC, Juan Luis Barrios of Finca La Merced, and Trevor Corlett of Madcap Coffee.

Tracy Ging recently joined the Volcafe team to focus exclusively on high value, sustainably sourced coffees. Prior to this new role, Tracy was the Vice President of Sustainability and Strategic Initiatives for S&D Coffee and Tea, Inc. where her responsibilities involved embedding sustainability into core business strategies, with major emphasis on ensuring sustainable coffee and tea value chains. Her career has also included roles at SCAA and the CQI. Tracy has been involved in the specialty coffee industry since 1999 and has held a variety of volunteer roles for SCAA as well as served on the Boards of Grounds for Health, Coffee Quality Institute, Coalition for Coffee Communities, and World Coffee Research (where she currently serves as Vice Chair). She is known for her collaborative leadership style and ability to get things done.

Aida Batlle is a fifth generation coffee producer operating her family’s three farms—Finca Los Alpes, Finca Kilamanjaro, and Finca Mauritania—in the Santa Ana region of El Salvador. In 2003, Aida entered her first Cup of Excellence competition and won with Kilamanjaro; Los Alpes placed 16th. Coffees from the Batlle family farms, as well as Finca Tanzania, which Aida personally owns, and the farms under the Aida Batlle Selection (ABS) certification, have been showcased by national barista champions from Greece, South Korea, and the United States, among others, at WBC events over the years.

Andrew Linnemann is the vice president of global coffee quality and engagement at Starbucks Coffee Company; he is one of the three leaders for the Global Coffee team, which is seen as the guardians and champions for coffee at Starbucks, managing all aspects of coffee from mountain top to countertop. Andrew joined Starbucks Coffee Company as a barista in 1993 following a career as a ski-bum. After 1995, Andrew moved into the corporate office, where in 1997 he joined the coffee team as a green coffee specialist, and subsequently moved to York, PA to open the York Roasting Plant, managing green coffee quality. Following a return to Seattle in 2001, his responsibility expanded to managing coffee quality across all roasting plants in the US and Netherlands. He has had extensive travel to origin countries all over the world; maintains a deep understanding of roasting and coffee manufacturing; has lead roasting and soluble development teams, and continue to be seen as a key coffee leader at Starbucks. He counts the creation of Pike Place roast and VIA Ready Brew, leading and managing thru the Starbucks Transformation as some of his key professional milestones. A native of New Jersey, Andrew earned his B. S. in Recreational Management from the University of Vermont. He lives in Issaquah, WA with his wife and family, and whenever he gets the chance, plays drums on the side.

Juan Luis Barrios is a third generation coffee farmer from Guatemala. He grew up in both Guatemala and the United States, and has been managing the family farms, Finca La Merced and Retiro del Quisaya, since 2006.
Juan Luis served on the board of Anacafé, the Guatemalan national association of coffee growers, from Nov. 2009 through Nov. 2015. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Specialty Coffee Association of America since 2014.

Chad Trewick has long been a champion of responsible sourcing. He’s spent his years in the specialty coffee industry building bridges between wide ranging stakeholders, from coffee farm to cupping room to boardroom. His focus (and personal mission) is to maintain access to quality while strengthening the entire value chain, ensuring scalable mutually beneficial relationships. Under his leadership, Caribou Coffee achieved 100% Rainforest Alliance certification in 2011 by working together with producers to elevate their farm operations (rather than abandoning long-term relationships). After more than two decades working primarily on the roaster side in the Specialty Coffee industry, plus time spent gaining a deeper understanding of the financial side of the coffee market, Chad formed Reciprocafé, LLC a consultancy service that prioritizes shared value and measured and meaningful coffee value chain work and support.
Trewick has participated in the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) as a volunteer for more than 20 years. He supports industry efforts toward knowledge about and understanding of our product and its value chain. He is the SCAA’s board of directors liaison to the organization’s Sustainability Council that works toward embedding more responsible behaviors throughout the coffee industry.

Trevor Corlett began his career in coffee in 2001 after falling in love with the culture of coffee shops while in college. That love grew after experiencing the joys of specialty coffee and resulted in years of professional growth while managing and starting numerous cafe/roasteries throughout the midwest. After two failed cafe/roastery startups, the fruits of those failures resulted in his founding of Madcap Coffee Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2008. He currently serves as CEO of Madcap Coffee Company and is based out of their East Coast office in Washington, DC. Outside of Madcap, Trevor is a Past Chair of the Barista Guild of America, a Specialized Instructor for the SCAA, a subject matter expert in espresso for SCAA, is serving on the BGA Barista Pathway Committee, and is the lead organizer for a regional coffee community group in DC called DMV Coffee. He is also an Editorial Advisor for Barista Magazine, and has been a contributor to Fresh Cup Magazine. He was named one of the most influential people in the beverage industry in 2013 by Imbibe Magazine. Trevor has been competing in barista competitions since 2008, having finished in the top 6 in a regional competition consecutively for the last 7 years. In 2013 and 2014, he had consecutive 3rd place finishes in the U.S. and most recently finished 7th at the 2015 United States Barista Championship. Trevor is lucky to have the unconditional love and support of his wife and three daughters.
